The complete set of formulas as seen in the outline of Archimedes (See Left) All these are about checking the adequacy of compensation whether in acidosis or in alkalosis and whether it is the bicarb or the PaCO2. The prime example of these is the Winter formula (See Pics 1 and 2) which will tell us whether there is adequate hyperventilation (hence low PaCO2 and respiratory alkalosis) to compensate for the low bicarb (metabolic acidosis). The reverse is true in checking the adequacy of compensation for metabolic alkalosis (See Pics 3 and 4). Another two formulas work on the bicarb and see if it is adequately compensating for acute or chronic respiratory acidosis (Pics 5 and 6) and also alkalosis (No Pics).
