A Blow to Windows Mobile

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine, a publication that has been devoted for Microsoft’s Windows Mobile since the days of Windows CE has unexpectedly and surprisingly announced that they gonna stop the magazine after 11 years of good business! Read their announcement here

These people have helped initiate and even convert thousands of users of Windows Mobile. Today they opted out of Microsoft and not only that but they even decided to switch to the iPhone!!

Iphone Life Magazine

If there is anything that we can learn from this move then it is the obvious carelessness and bad marketing of Microsoft and the booming intelligence of Steve Jobs.

So for us pediatricians and doctors we should get prepared for the switch abandoning the Palm and Pocket PC and picking up the iPhone soon. But not now just wait until developers get their apps into the iPhone probably within the next few months.

Dear Epocrates, Here is a Peds suggestion …

Epocrates

Epocrates Essentials is undoubtedly one of the best all-in-one applications that any pediatrician may ever have on her/his handheld.

However, there is always a place for improvement…

All of the features built in the essentials package are great and make no mistake about it peds are using them more frequently than other programs check out this poll

Every single portion of it can be customized to the pediatric needs check these pda4peds reviews to see how each one of these Epocrates products can be an invaluable tool to every pediatrician: Rx, Sx, Dx, CME, ID, Lab, Tables, MedTools.

So here’s the suggestion, Why don’t you make a pediatric version of Essentials!

  • As far as the Rx, We don’t want to bother ourselves with adult doses, we are all syrup-minded!
  • We don’t want to read about asthma in adults make a special pediatric Dx.
  • We don’t want to pay for coronary artery disease formulas we just care about Kawasaki!
  • Who said that colorectal CA and ulcerative colitis are common causes of GI bleeding, get your Sx a child version.
  • And the laboratory results are obviously different in the pediatric age group.
  • And so on for all your content.

So invite a good number of pediatric figures and start working on a real pediatric version and let it be little less pricey than the general package, after all peds are less wealthy than surgeons!! And if there are pediatric people who still want adult and general content they can then purchase the general package.

By the way don’t go into the mistake of PEPID as they marketed a pediatric suite but in fact it is just has to be purchased within their whole package.

Hope this message reaches the ears of Epocrates …

Oh, a reminder for peds readers, forget to tell you that if you really like essentials as your best all-in-one application please vote for it in the best pediatric PDA programs poll.

The Red Book on PDA, Which one to buy?

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Three versions of the Red Book available from different venders:

1) AAP Store

2) Skyscape  and

3) Unbound Medicine.

So which one should we go for?

The Red Book

The one available from AAP is in the Mobipocket format which is a very nice ebook reader and comfortable to navigate but the price is $109.95 for non members (99.95 if CD purchase!) and $94.95 for members! Check out this AAP page

Skyscape offers the same 2006 27th edition for $99.95 in the familiar Skyscape format which very user friendly but there are some difficulties with tables.

Unbound Medicine gives us exactly the same edition at exactly the same price but with additional web and wireless access!

Given what’s said, it seems that the best option is from Unbound Medicine, awaiting your comments!
