SearchingPediatrics.com ‘ Googling Pediatrics!

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

A new website searchingpediatrics.com has been recently launched; this website not only can be accessed on a desktop browser but also on any mobile phone that has browsing capability and it can be looked up on the go while we walk around the hospital corridors!

Here’s how it looked like on a Windows Mobile screen and similar pages will be seen with Palm and Blackberry but unfortunately it is not so easily navigated on the iPhone as you have to zoom in with every new page.

The idea is that when we search Google for a certain pediatric topic the search engine will look up all the billions of pages throughout the entire world wide web and not infrequently it may return search results that are not high yield or at least not of interest to us ‘pediatricians’.

This website essentially configures Google to search only the websites that pediatricians trust and rely on when looking up evidence based pediatric information online. So the Google Custom Search will look up emedicine, AAP policies and guidelines , Pediatrics journal, Bright Futures, Epocrates, and a number of other high profile pediatric online resources.

Consequently, it bypasses the burden of skimming and filtering mainstream Google results and delivers highly specific page results tailored to our pediatric needs. So for example I searched Google for Febrile Seizures and I searched searchingpediatrics.com for the same keyword [see screenshots above] and guess what? You’ll have all the unnecessary pages results removed such as those targeting consumers and general public and you’ll get only the results that we actually look for.

Isn’t that great? This is just like having a special Pediatric Google!

Now, You may or may not agree with the list of websites that this custom search includes and you can contact the site owner if you have any suggestion.

This is just another step towards web based applications where we actually find everything online instead of the traditional local computer or even PDA hard drives.

You can also have searchingpediatrics as your default search engine when you download the LinkedPeds toolbar.

The website is founded by Donna M. D’Alessandro, M.D the founder of Generalpediatrics.com a website that helped thousands of pediatricians locate useful pediatric information on the internet and we should really thank her for such a brilliant idea.

Android is out

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

The first mobile phone that makes use of the new Google mobile OS code what’s called Android is out for sale from T mobile.

Google have made use of their home page to advertise the new G1 Phone from T-Mobile and as of today if you go to Google you’ll find the link there, this will definitely means millions of clicks on that link!

Not only the device is out but even applications are already being marketed by venders check the list of Android applications on Handango!

What does that mean for us pediatricians?

First; it means that now we have another option added to the list of mobile systems that we can use in clinical practice. The list is now Palm, Windows Mobile, iPhone, Blackberry, Symbian (Nokia) and add to them Google’s android.

Second; The future holds more and more shifting towards mobile applications as a company such as Google created first Google Chrome internet browser and then made sure to put it’s foot in the field of mobile platforms.

Third; Mobiles are going to be more affordable and cheaper as we go on as Android is offered for a free and it’s an open-source platform and T-mobile deal unlike Apple+At&T is not exclusive.

Fourth; Don’t hurry up, wait for a while before you buy this phone because medical application usually take some time before they find their way to new platforms.

We just wonder why the name Android, does it indicate a small but robust masculine “androgenic” device!

5 Min Ped Consult from Skyscape; $80 or $70!

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

At the time this post was written; Skyscape offered two versions of the 5 Minutes Pediatric Consult, one for $79.95 and another for $69.95!

The URL of the old [missing iPhone version] $70 price is here

http://www.skyscape.com/estore/productdetail.aspx?ProductId=1388

The URL of the New Skyscape versions with $80 price is here

http://www.skyscape.com/estore/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=2364

What’s going on!

It seems that they were upgrading products to include the new iPhone Subscription version and they did it here but they forgot to delete the old URL. But even if this is the case then why they increased the Standard version price to $79.95! The $69.95 price quote is standard from other vendors such as Unbound Medicine.

So is it really that they cheered us up with new lowered iPhone prices but meanwhile they gonna balance that off with an increased standard [Windows Mobile and Palm] prices!

Skyscape’s New Versions!

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Recently Skyscape has started to offer two versions of their products namely Standard and Subscription Based!

Here’s how it looks on the product page:

The above example is what’s seen on the 5 Minutes Pediatric Consult product page. There’s a price issue about this particular product [read this post].

In a previous post we concluded that there is no point in Skyscape’s subscription as long as you can keep the title after the end of the subscription period and this is specially true as new editions of titles already have to be purchased altogether with no discounted upgrade price. It seems Skyscape has figured out the issue and they came up with this solution.

Here’s how they did it:

Pop up windows that appear when we click on the ? icon against each version [as seen in the picture above] exactly reads as follows:

Standard Version:

  • Free content updates for 12 months (not including new editions)
  • Continued use after 12 months (no updates)
  • 90 days phone support (chat and email ongoing)

Subscription Based Version:

  • Content updates include new editions
  • Convenient auto-renewal option for continued use
  • Ongoing phone, chat and email support
  • Device upgrade protection

Obviously they mean that the subscription based version will disappear if you don’t renew while the standard one will stay on your device.

Of note also is that the New subscription based version is only available for the iPhone! Perhaps they thought that the only that they can produce lower prices [to compete with the iTunes crazy low prices of apps] is by actually giving a one year subscription so that we keep paying them every year!

Even then their prices still far more expensive than the other iPhone apps that we’ve seen so far!

Epocrates Essentials for half price!

Friday, September 12th, 2008

One of the best multi-functional tools that a pediatrician can install on the PDA is this gold standard old timer [check this poll results].

Epocrates Essentials has evolved over time to fit the needs of physicians not only in US but also world-wide.

The good news is: they are giving it 50% off the price. Check the Epocrates Special Offer page for further details.

Epocrates %50 Discount

They have done that before (around a year ago) when they offered the two year subscription for the price one.

One of the biggest hurdles for pediatricians in getting such great medical software is it’s affordability specially for those working in developing countries.

So cheer up and get your copy before they close the doors and thank you Epocrates.

Just Another Medical iPhone App

iSilo ebook reader , one of the most famous ebook readers among medical users, has become available for the iphone.

Isilo on the iphone

This is just another boost to the medical iphone and the list of medical apps are growing fast.

iSilo is great for the Palm and Windows Mobile in the sense that it makes reading ebooks so easy and fun so imagine the picture on an iphone platform? this is definitely going to be a great software to have.

They are giving it at an introductory price of $9.99 and am sure the price will go up soon, check the App store page where you can download it.

A Blow to Windows Mobile

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine, a publication that has been devoted for Microsoft’s Windows Mobile since the days of Windows CE has unexpectedly and surprisingly announced that they gonna stop the magazine after 11 years of good business! Read their announcement here

These people have helped initiate and even convert thousands of users of Windows Mobile. Today they opted out of Microsoft and not only that but they even decided to switch to the iPhone!!

Iphone Life Magazine

If there is anything that we can learn from this move then it is the obvious carelessness and bad marketing of Microsoft and the booming intelligence of Steve Jobs.

So for us pediatricians and doctors we should get prepared for the switch abandoning the Palm and Pocket PC and picking up the iPhone soon. But not now just wait until developers get their apps into the iPhone probably within the next few months.

Epocrates Online: Is It Ready Yet!

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Since the first moment I had a look at Epocrates products I was wondering why these guys are not putting their various Essentials components online.

Now, they have done it, not for all products though it’s only the Rx, Dx, Multicheck, MedCalc, and Tables right now. Many of these products are available for free EXCEPT some features.

Of course the Rx has been there online since the birth of Epocrates and now it’s coupled with Dx. That’s great news and we can sense the smell that in the near future all of their great products will be available online.

Check the Epocrates Online website and see how does it work

Epocrates Dx Online

The still missing stuff:

  1. We are still waiting for the Sx, and ID portions and perhaps the dictionary and ICD codes also.
  2. There is yet no wireless version of Epocrates Online so we are still unable to log on using our mobile devices, check out the pediatric mobile websites currently available.
  3. The Dx portion is only available for US and Canada, folks elsewhere are still unfortunate!
  4. The Dx is not yet available for the iPhone version of Epocrates!

So the answer is that it is not yet ready for all of our needs.

We just wish that they’ll soon add these missing stuff soon and thanks Epocrates for adding the Dx.

Epocrates, Finally a built-in iPhone app

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

One of the major reasons that I used to tell my colleagues (read this article) why not to switch to the iPhone is that it doesn’t accept third party applications and therefore we have to use Palm or Windows Mobile devices in order to install those medical porgrams that we all crave for.

Now that has changed, Apple finally opened up the iPhone platform for developers and Epocrates is the first ever medical application that is available for the iPhone.

However there is a caveat here, this is not the full Epocrates Essentials package this is only Epocrates Rx. However there are great pros here:

  • Once they started with Rx it means that they will soon add the Dx, and Sx and other features of the Essentials.
  • There is Pill ID pictures which is missing from the other PDA version.
  • The application is 100% free download from iTunes store. However I’ve received some emails from the Middle East and they are frustrated over there because iTunes is not available worldwide!

If you used Epocrates Rx on your Iphone and you really liked please vote for it as the best pediatric iphone application.

Make no mistake about it, iPhone is going to be the next device that physicians holding in hospital corridors (after years of domination by Palm and Windows Mobile).

iPhone.. Welcome to our world

Epocrates no longer supports international drug names

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

We mentioned in an earlier post that Epocrates is one of the PDA drug solutions available for UK based pediatricians and some other countries.

However, they recently announced that they no longer include these trade names (See their announcement ).

This is really unfortunate for the many pediatricians who subscribed to Epocrates Rx and who are working in the UK.

We suggest that Epocrates should refund those colleagues…
