Lexi Pediatric Suite

Just another great pediatric resource for the PDA provided from the makers of The Pediatric Dosage Handbook
The Lexi Pediatric Suite
sports a collection of a drug reference, drug interaction tool, 5 minutes pediatric consult, poisoning and toxicology, and a number of clinical calculators.

The suite is offered for $175 per year and the reason for the yearly subscription is that it is not a static reference but rather a constantly updated database of drugs at a fairly frequent rate.

The Lexi database of drugs is one of the most trusted resources so that even the AAP’s Pediatric Care Online and UpToDate depends on it.

The software is installed and updated via a Java based desktop component named Lexi Connect.

Lexi Connect

The interface shows us what database we are subscribed to and whether it has been changed or not so that we know when to update. Although this is fairly easy to use but it could have been much easier if it was from the in-device software with wireless connection and let’s hope they will add this in future upgrades.

What’s missing from the Pediatric Suite is a lab reference and this could have been overcome by adding the Lexi-Lab and Diagnostic Procedures and if this is done the Lexi Pediatric Suite will be a serious competitor of the Epocrates Essentials.

The suite interface is equipped with keyword search that can be executed across all installed books and tools so for example you can search for a drug in the 5 minutes, the drug database, the toxicology, and the interaction tool.

The poisoning and toxicology reference is consistent with their huge database and arguably contains the longest list of chemical and compounds ever available for the handheld. However, it is missing some practical common index words read review for further details.

The Lexi-Interact and Lexi-Calc do not install themselves within the main Lexi reader but as separate files and so they need to be closed separately on Windows Mobile platform but that’s not a great deal and it’s OK.

Lexi-Comp also offers the same features Online for yearly subscription and so not only on handheld but also desktop access is available.

Bottom line; this is great all-in-one application that is extremely useful in clinical pediatrics and if you like it enough you may vote for it in The Best All in One Application Poll.
